Diagnostic Dilemma: Primary Peritoneal Mesothelioma With Para-Occupational Asbestos Exposure

A 62-year-old woman presented to a hospital in rural Australia with complaints of left lower quadrant abdominal pain, bloating, dyspnea, and a dry cough. She reported weight loss of 4 kg over 2months (previously, 48.5kg), fevers, and fatigue. Her medical history was significant for chronic constipation since age 20 years, and hemorrhoidectomy at age 59 years. Physical examination revealed moderate abdominal distension with mild tenderness. The patient recalled domestic exposure to asbestos from her husband, who was an insulation worker.
